St John's College, Cambridge

The Samuel Butler Room

The postgraduate society of St John's. Common room, committee, and community since 1960.

Welcome to the SBR!

The Samuel Butler Room (SBR) is the postgraduate students’ society at St John’s College, University of Cambridge.

“The SBR” is sometimes used to refer to several different things:

  • The postgraduate student body. All master’s and PhD students at St John’s, as well as clinical-year medical and veterinary students, are automatically members of the Samuel Butler Room Society.

  • The Samuel Butler Room Committee. The SBR Committee is elected annually to act as representatives for postgraduate students, to organise and promote events, and to maintain and provide resources and facilities for SBR members. See the current committee members here.

  • The physical Samuel Butler Room. The SBR is also the name of the postgraduate common room in the College, located in I2 First Court. The room is available for all SBR members to use, and is where we host most of our events. In addition, we have a graduate study room located at 1 All Saints Passage.

What we do

Academic

  • Grad talks. Grad talks offer Johnians a chance to share their research with the college community in a relaxed and informal setting. Talks are held periodically throughout Michaelmas and Lent terms, typically before BA Table, and consist of a 12-minute presentation followed by discussion. Complimentary wine is provided for attendees. Speakers are welcome to enjoy a complimentary formal dinner at any time during the term as a thank-you for their contribution. Sign-up sheets for grad talks are sent out at the start of Michaelmas and Lent terms.

  • Postgraduate research symposium. Each year, in Lent term, the SBR hosts a one-day research symposium open to all postgraduate students. This event gives Johnians the chance to share their research with the college community and alumni in a more formal setting, similar to what might be seen in an academic conference. Symposium talks are a maximum of 15 minutes, with an extra 5 minutes allotted for questions. Complimentary refreshments are provided for attendees between sessions, and a special drinks reception is held in the SBR after the conclusion of the final session. Sign-ups for symposium talks open at the beginning of Lent term.

Ents

Throughout the year, the SBR hosts multiple parties: sBrOILER ROOMS, end-of-term parties, etc. Announcements are made via e-mail and on our Instagram.

Formal Halls

  • Postgrads dine with fellows. Every term, fellows invite postgraduate students to dine with them at high table. Tickets are free, but limited. They are available on UPay. Postgrads should not attend more than once per academic year.
  • BA Table. Every Tuesday and Friday during term, one of the three hall tables is reserved for graduate students. Be sure to purchase your BA Table ticket in advance on UPay, as it often sells out. Tickets are exclusive to graduates.
  • Swaps. Swaps are inter-collegiate dining events where we dine at other Cambridge colleges and invite them to dine with us. These events may include parties, and we also have swaps with colleges like Balliol (Oxford), Trinity (Dublin), Ghislieri (Italy), and Uppsala (Sweden).
  • Port & Sherry. Port & Sherry is offered in the SBR after hall on Fridays, for free!

Fresher's Fortnight

The SBR hosts a wide range of events over a span of two weeks to welcome postgraduate freshers. These events are integrated into a programme comprising mandatory freshers activities such as registration, matriculation, and orientation as well as university-wide activities such as the CUSU Freshers’ Fair and Societies Fairs.

Sans Frontières

These exclusive events for postgraduates, fellows, and visiting fellows offer unique opportunities to engage with history, culture, and the college community. Enjoy historical walks, museum tours, cheese tastings, wine cellar tours, and social gatherings like dining with fellows. Special events such as ghost stories and commemorative evenings provide a mix of learning and entertainment throughout the term.

Committee

The SBR committee is elected annually. It represents the interests of postgraduates within college, organises events throughout the year, and strives to make college a welcoming place for every SBR member.

  • Soleh Anderlini

    Soleh Anderlini

    President

    sa961@cam.ac.uk
    About

Hello! I’m currently a fourth-year PhD student in Chemistry where I work on plastic and CO2 recycling and upcycling using microbes. In my second year as President, I've enjoyed continuing to represent postgraduate interests in college and advocating for increased transparency around investments, cost increases, and other changes. Introducing events such as the sBrOILER ROOMs and other cross-college opportunities has been great fun and we will continue this in the coming year!

Please feel free to contact me about anything mentioned above as well as with any other concerns you would like to raise with college or ideas you have for the SBR!

  • Audrey Chan

    Audrey Chan

    Co-Vice-President

    tyc33@cam.ac.uk
    About

I am Audrey, a third-year PhD student in English from Hong Kong. My research is about Ernest Hemingway and the Spanish visual arts, and I nocturnally work from home with my four spoiled cats. As the Co-VP, I enjoy bringing together postgraduates from different disciplines together and working with the College to build a cultured environment. Together with Marina, I organise SBR formals as well as International swaps with Pavia, Trinity College Dublin, and nations in Uppsala, which I hope you are all enthusiastic about! I also work closely with the other executives to represent your voices to the College and support your needs.

I regularly run tasting and art events (think 50 Best cocktails, wine & cheese pairings with Alexander, tea, calligraphy, ink art, etc.) in the SBR. You can also find me on the Committee of the Cambridge University Blind Wine Tasting Society. Maybe the SBR should make me the Tasting Officer instead! If you are looking for restaurant/formal (I have indeed completed my formal challenge!) recommendations in Cambridge, try me!

  • Marina Rodriguez Lopez

    Marina Rodriguez Lopez

    Co-Vice-President

    mr739@cam.ac.uk
    About

Hi! I’m Marina, a third-year PhD student in Behavioural Neuroscience and Psychology. As one of your Vice-Presidents, I’m keen to help build a supportive, active, and welcoming community, organise events, and represent your ideas and concerns. Outside the SBR and my PhD, I do a lot of teaching and supervisions, was the 2025 SJC May Ball VP, co-organise the OrchardOCD public lecture series on obsessive-compulsive related disorders, and dance (occasionally). You’ll usually find me in the café trying to get work done while chatting to whoever is nearby. Always happy to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to say hi!

  • Alexander Corbett

    Alexander Corbett

    Treasurer

    alc220@cam.ac.uk
    About

Alexander is allegedly social enough to have been one of the many social secretaries and to organise the internal (and Oxford) swaps which generated a lot of invoices. He is a viva era PhD student in Biotechnology and will talk you to death about artificial DNA if you're not careful. He is also a big fan of spreadsheets, being friendly, arriving 5min early to everything, and is intolerant of unread emails which is probably why it was suggested he do this job. Alexander likes Cambridge but will tell anyone that he thinks it would be better with a metre and a half of snow every winter and some hills which is how you know he's from the northern half of North America. Please say hi and he'll happily try to be helpful.

Associate Committee Memberships

Associate committee memberships are designed to promote involvement in the SBR for those of you who want to make maximum impact on the postgraduate committee without the 12-month commitment required to be a committee member. The important things to know about associate committee memberships are:

  • Low commitment! Associate memberships are not time-limited, so you can join for as little or as long as you want. We hope this will be particularly exciting for Masters students, who we know can’t serve on committee for a full year.
  • Optional responsibility! There are no expectations for minimum involvement to be an associate committee member. Associates will instead be added to working groups for things they are interested in, and will be invited to volunteer for whatever tasks need doing, and to contribute ideas for growing grad life in John’s. Do as much or as little as you like, when you have the time!
  • MAXIMUM impact! Grad life at John’s is made what it is by our vibrant and exciting community getting involved at any level. We want as many people to get involved with the committee as we can, to not only help run our programme of events and socials, but to foster our communities and friendships in college. Meet new people, do something really meaningful for the college community, take ownership of your SBR, and get a snazzy title to add to your CV.

Join this group chat to stay in the loop for the current academic year.

Resources & facilities

As a postgraduate student, you have access to a wide range of resources and facilities designed to support both your academic journey and your well-being. From dedicated study spaces to social spaces for relaxation and connection, these facilities are here to help you thrive. Whether you’re a new student looking for accommodation or someone in need of welfare support, resources are available to ensure you have everything you need to succeed and feel at home at John’s.

Postgraduate Freshers’ Guide 2026-2027

This guide has been produced by the SBR Committee and Postgraduate office to help you, new postgraduate students, during your arrival and first few weeks in Cambridge and at St John’s College. We advise you skim over it at least once, and then you can refer to each section in more detail as and when you need to.

You can read the guide on this site or download a copy here.

Welfare

Starting a new part of your life can be exciting, but it can also be stressful and intimidating. Finding the right person to talk to can make life much, much easier.

Contacts in college.

  • Your College tutor is available for non-academic matters, including financial support, personal difficulties, problems with your supervisor, etc.

  • The College Nurses are trained and confidential counsellors as well. Please get in touch with the Nurses if you would like to be referred to the college counsellor.

  • The Chaplain, is available as a confidential listener for all members of college, whatever their religious convictions.

  • Student Services (F staircase Chapel Court) can help with College issues, such as bills, student cards etc.

  • All new students are given a graduate buddy who can help you settle into college and answer any questions you may have. They’ll meet up with you at least twice during the first term, and be a friendly face as you get used to Cambridge postgraduate life.

  • The SBR Committee welcomes questions, and welfare officers are especially available to direct you to the appropriate people/places.

Welfare Resource Pack. For a comprehensive list of resources that are available you within college, the university, and the city of Cambridge, see the Welfare Resource Pack.

Anonymous welfare request form. Your welfare officers are committed to helping you with any questions or concerns you may have. We acknowledge that sometimes it can be challenging to come forward with questions or concerns. This is why we have created an anonymous form with space for you to ask a question or make a welfare-related request. It will be forwarded to the welfare officer(s). All responses are completely anonymous, and no email addresses or CRS IDs will be traceable.

Accommodation

Graduate students at St John’s College typically live in the College’s hostels, located around Cambridge. These include older, more affordable terraced houses and larger, newer homes, which are more spacious but farther from the town center. Traditional college-style accommodation is also available.

Rooms vary in size and rent, with most containing a sink and basic furniture like a bed, desk, wardrobe, and shelves. Many rooms have wireless internet, connected to the College’s network. Bathrooms, showers, and kitchens are shared, with kitchens offering communal spaces and storage but no provided cooking equipment. Most hostels have common rooms and are equipped with some appliances, such as microwaves and kettles, left behind by past residents.

Graduate Study Room (GSR)

The Graduate Study Room or GSR is located on the second floor of 1 All Saints Passage, behind the Old Divinity School, and can be accessed with your Cam Card. This study space is exclusively for postgraduates. There are monitors, desk space, whiteboards, and other amenities. There is also a reading alcove with some couches for relaxing in between study sessions.

For detailed directions on how to access the room, please click here.

The Samuel Butler Room (SBR)

The Samuel Butler Room (SBR), located in the corner of First Court, is the heart of the SBR society. It’s a space for social events, and serves port and sherry before and after BA Table. Accessible to all St John’s graduates with a University Card, the room offers a quiet, comfortable environment for studying, relaxing, or meeting peers. Inside, you’ll find a TV with a Wii, board games, a pool table, a piano, and a small kitchen. We encourage graduates to use the space responsibly and tidy up after use so everyone can enjoy it.

History of the SBR

The Samuel Butler Room Society was founded in 1960 as a society for the postgraduate students of St John’s College (what most other colleges call their MCR or Middle Combination Room). The society and postgraduate common room are named in honour of Samuel Butler, a Victorian author, polymath, and sheep farmer who was a student at St John’s from 1854 to 1858. You can read more about the man himself here and more about the founding of the SBR here.
